Crayon Vase

Melting 256 Crayola crayons and then turning them on a lathe to produce a beautiful rainbow coloured vase is a little bit trippy but ever so satisfying.

For the past 16 years, Bruce Zaccagnino has worked alone to build what is thought to be the world’s largest HO-scale model railroad set. Featuring more than nine miles of track, Zaccagnino's masterpiece also boasts 400 bridges, 3,000 miniature buildings and 50,000 streets. Welcome to your childhood fantasy. Welcome to Northlandz.

Take a look at this new type of 3D capture technology that allows high quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed, and transmitted anywhere in the world in real-time. When combined with mixed reality displays such as HoloLens(tm), this technology allows users to see and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they are actually present in their physical space. Communicating and interacting with remote users becomes as natural as face to face communication. Microsoft Research appear to be well on the way to providing us with what they already had a long time ago in a galaxy far far away...

Cheyenne Mountain

I first heard about Cheyenne Mountain as it was the fictitious home to the Stargate programme. According to legend, it is a sleeping dragon that many years ago saved the Ute Tribe. In the Native American story, the Great Spirit punished the people by sending a massive flood, but after they repented, it sent a dragon to drink the water away. The dragon, engorged by the massive amount of water, fell asleep, was petrified and then became the mountain.

Unlike the dragon of legend, the Cheyenne Mountain Complex has never slept during 50 years of operations. Since being declared fully operational in April 1966, the installation has played a vital role in the Department of Defence during both peacetime and wartime.

London Day & Night

More than a time-lapse, more than live action. French filmmaker Franck Matellini shows us the stunning similarities and differences that can be found around the city of London. Matellini stitches a side-by-side comparison together using footage from the city in daytime and after hours to showcase how the same thing can be so different depending on the situation.

Voice Over Ice

Many will know Ice-T as a rapper and an actor. But how many of you are familiar with his former career as a voice actor for children's cartoons? Jimmy Fallon explores some classic examples.

The name actually refers to tree sap that forms the lacquer that is used on 'Japanware' bowls as far back as 5,500 years ago. Relax and watch as Ippei Saginoya demonstrates the painstaking process of this beautiful ancient technique. For more information on Urushi take a look here.

Plotters are not new, but this robot can do so much more. Pens, markers, fountain pens, and other writing utensils can all be used and the output can look so much more like natural handwriting than any printer can achieve. I found it very satisfying to watch for some reason.

Photography With Intention

In a time of Instagram & Snapchat, it can be forgotten that photography hasn't always been an instantly gratifying process where mistakes can be rectified or ignored at will. Ansel Adams was an artist and a technician that had to craft his photographs. Watch as the Nerdwriter explains.

Fast Erosion

Water wearing down pebbles on a beach until they become grains of sand is one thing, but how about this? Slicing cleanly through a laptop like a hot knife through butter and with just water!

Old Words

If you had a time machine, how far back could you go and still understand English? If you only went back as far as the 1800's or 1700's you'd be OK, but any further and things start to get a little tricky.

Darth Maul: Apprentice

For a change I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but it is too good not to share anyway. A group of fans got together to make a film to fill in the early career of Sith Lord, Darth Maul. To be honest the skill and production skills involved here make it hard to distinguish from something that Disney/Lucasfilm might produce. Be sure to check out some of the "making of" videos if this is your thing.

Old Rock

Stary Olsa are a mediaeval Belarusian music band who usually perform traditional folk balladry and the work of renaissance composers from their homeland. In this video though they perform a cracking version of Another Brick In The Wall by Pink Floyd on a Belarus TV program. Check out their website for a chance to own an album of these types of covers. By the way the band's name is from a brook in the west part of the MahilioŇ≠ Region of Belarus.

Have you got what it takes to be an Astronaut? I confess that like many others I'm sure, I had a childhood dream to go to space. But what are the job specs?

The Trial of Ralph McTell

This video is a comedy sketch from back in the day featuring Raw Sex who were the 'house band' for French & Saunders. They decide to put Ralph McTell on trial for publishing crimes and choose to call some fabulous surprise witnesses. What a treat to see Mark Knopfler, Lemmy Kilmister, David Gilmour, Mark King and Gary Moore not taking themselves too seriously.

Block Is Back

Ken Block is at it again. Maybe he should plan his journey more carefully so that he doesn't need to drive so recklessly. :-)

This time it is Gymkhana 8 and it tales place in the closed streets of Dubai.
