The Awareness

On the eve of a technological breakthrough, an insignificant janitor and a prominent engineer are faced with a decision that will alter the course of humanity: the release of the first aware computer system into the world. A great short sci-fi film with a twist.

Logos

Do you remember all the discussions that centred around the logo that was created for the 2012 London Olympics? Some loved it and some hated but everybody seemed to have an opinion. But if you see the Nike swoosh you instantly identify with the company and its ethos. How does a simple mark end up meaning something big? Joe Posner, and Michael Bierut explain.

Sounds Effective

Before digital trickery became common place, there was a time when all effects in TV and films had to be practical. Where things got particularly creative was in radio drama where producers really had to rely on their listener's imagination.

The following video from 1938 gives an inside view of how sound effects were produced in the radio studio. We get to see such things as one guy doing both voices in a conversation, an adult do a very convincing impersonation of a child's voice, guys playing cowboys impersonating the sound of conversing while riding by playing "horsie", all while reading their lines. The timing is quite beautiful.

Try listening a second time with your eyes closed.

Pitch Perfect

Young Dylan (he is 8) may well have, musically speaking, the perfect set of ears. Watch him not only identify single notes within seconds but then go on to pick out intervals and even poly-chords. Astonishing!

Digits

Another great short film. A guy loses the last two digits of a girl's number and tries every combination to track her down. A love story of the modern age.

Working Lightsaber

Well it is as close as we have got so far. This chap has built a working replica of a Lightsaber from the Star Wars franchise. The build actually looks quite beautiful and the flame is stunning. You could say that it is "an elegant weapon for a more civilised time".

Live Music?

A band of robots, called End Of Life (EOL), does a pretty good rendition of The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson. A little lacking soul I guess, but a great job by the creator. I particularly like the use of the scanner.

Real Life Tycoon

Do you remember the game RollerCoaster Tycoon? Click the link if not but in a nutshell it allowed you to play god whilst building a fun park and a lot of people really enjoyed torturing the attending masses much like they do in the various incarnations of The Sims. Anyway, here we get to see the consequences as some brilliant special effects illustrate how the game would work in real life.

Plane Amazing

A new advert for Singapore Airlines features a stunning model of an Airbus A380 made entirely of manilla. The level of detail that artist Luca Iaconi-Stewart has put into this is truly phenomenal.

Too Foo

This makes the hairs on my neck stand up. 1000 musicians play Learn to Fly by Foo Fighters to ask Dave Grohl to come and play in Cesena, Italy last July. Apparently he was moved to tears by the video and immediately agreed.

Hoth Wedding

Long time subscribers to e-clecticism will know I am a keen photographer and a keen student of Photoshop. So things like this always interest me greatly. Photographer Tanya Musgrave converts a fairly standard wedding photograph in to a Star Wars masterpiece set on the ice planet of Hoth. For more information see here. Can you tell I'm excited about the new film?

Short Wars

You may have heard that Star Wars VII - The Force Awakens opens in cinemas this month. But perhaps you're one of the few people on the planet that have not seen the other six films and are struggling to squeeze them in? Never fear, the following video is the perfect solution. They did an amazing job of making it so you can follow the story perfectly.
