Up & Down

If you think that the space race was over in 1969, think again. A race to be the first to provide a commercial trip to space for those willing to pay is very much on. We're one step closer now that Blue Origin has managed to successfully launch their rocket and it not only flew to space, reaching its planned test altitude of 329,839 feet (100.5 kilometres) but they executed an historic landing back at the launch site in West Texas.

Earth, Wind & Fire

I have featured the work of the Slow Mo Guys a few times before but this one really caught my attention. This time Gav and Dan combine wind with fire to create a swirling vortex of flames and film it at a huge rate of frames per second. It looks unreal.

It's All About The Bass

Picture the scene. You're among a group of friends listening to music when the beat drops and you all start bouncing your heads simultaneously. Satisfying eh? Well perhaps there is a scientific reason for this. The following video explains why we love a good bass rhythm.

Sea Wars

I have seen a few parodies of the trailers to Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, but this has to be my favourite. The US Navy, and in particular the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, have put together a really professional looking effort. I particularly like the stand-in for BB-8.

Good Old Days

The technical excellence that barbershop quartets display has always amazed me. I can't sing a note but I can still appreciate the talent and skill that goes in to the nailing the harmonies. Add in a little a humour and it completes the magic. In this video Main Street give us a taste of the future when the pop songs of today will be considered "good old songs".

Lewis Or Smith?

I'm not sure I can see why many people in this country get excited about the annually recurring advertisement for the John Lewis department store. Yes I can see that they have spent a lot of money in conveying a "message" but deep down they just want you to give them your money. However, this year's offering did catch my eye. not because of the commercial itself, it was the usual schmaltz, but the re-working by a fellow Whovian. I hope you enjoy it.

Climbing Video Game

As a keen climber I'm always looking for new and innovative ways on improving. In the video below we can see that you can even turn it into a form of video game with high-scores etc, I hope that the creator, Randori can mass produce it for a climbing wall near me.

Megavalanche

A downhill mountain-bike race, departing from Le Pic Blanc (3300m) and finishing at Allemont (720m). 1400 participants from 20 different countries, 4 days of training and racing, a total of over 4000 downhill metres in competition and it is carnage. In this video watch Jamie Nicoll crashing into other riders straight after the start in the the first 2 minutes of the race on the glacier.

Forging A Cut

Bloodroot Blades. Meet the science nerds in Georgia who re-forge abandoned scrap metal into blades with a multi-year waiting list. Truly beautiful work that makes me wish I could have a try.
