Voices From The Past

As a history buff I enjoy historical movies especially if they are historically accurate. But even the good ones have to make concessions on accuracy for the sake of modern limitations. Take language for example. The English language we know and love is not what was spoken in times past and even when the movies try to re-create it, they have to keep it understandable. So how accurate are they? Listen to linguist James Harbeck on his podcast for The Week and let him take you back to the times of Shakespeare, Beowulf and King Arthur for a look at how the language has altered.

Monty Hawking

There are many reasons to love Stephen Hawking. Everyone's favourite theoretical physicist and cosmologist has not only inspired many to investigate things for themselves with his gravitational singularity theorems but he has never taken himself too seriously. He has appeared in Star Trek, The Simpsons, Futurama and The Big Bang Theory and even music videos. But now he has a video of his own! He has recorded his version of Monty Python's Galaxy Song from their film The Meaning of Life, and it is available as a digital download and on limited edition 7” vinyl from today.

Saturn's Rings

Here is an improved, extended version of an already amazing photographic animation of the rings of Saturn. Created from over 30,000 real photographs taken by the Cassini spacecraft, the video contains no CGI and is rendered at a resolution of 5.6k (5600 x 4200 pixels).

Domino Sketch

It is hard to comprehend the patience that must have gone in to making this. Stop-motion is time consuming at the best of times but combined with a domino effect it must have been heart-breaking at times. Enjoy!

Man Of Letters

It seems there is something very satisfying about watching someone do very skillful calligraphy. Seb Lester has been posting Vines of him drawing some stunning looking logos and now someone has kindly combined them in to a YouTube video. I keep watching these over again.
