Postcards from Pripyat

As a photographer there are many subjects, locations and styles I'd like to shoot, even if they have been covered many times before by others. I guess I want to try and put my own spin on it. One such location is Chernobyl and it's surroundings. I was a teenager when the disaster hit reactor 4 back in 1986 and ever since I played Call of Duty - Modern Warfare, the abandoned town of Pripyat has fascinated me. I'd love to visit with my camera. Until then I can marvel at what others show us such as Danny Cooke who recorded these "postcards" on his visit.

Chimney Climb

Solo Climbing or Free Climbing is climbing with no ropes or equipment. It is normally associated with rocks and cliffs but this chap decides to climb a 280m chimney, the second tallest structure in Romania. Not for the feint of heart.

Major To Minor

Chase Holfelder has created an interesting set of videos where he has transposed several hit songs from the major key you are used to here them in to a minor key. With some rearrangement as well the entire song takes on a whole new more melancholy feel. Below is my favourite example, Every Breath You Take by The Police. Check out his channel for others.

Fire Painter

Steven Spazuk is an extremely talented artist, however his art is perhaps unlike anything you've ever seen before. While most artists use paint or ink, Spazuk's art form is a bit more..."flammable". He creates his beautiful works of art using fire and a feather! Spazuk has spent the last 14 years developing and perfecting his soot painting technique, but the creation process always has an element of random spontaneity and improvisation.

You can see more of his work at his website.

Ingress

I like video games but to be honest they very rarely hold my interest longer than a few weeks. The trouble is I'm an outdoors kind of guy and and gaming and enjoying the outdoors just don't mix right? Well actually that's no longer true. Google have managed to combine a very engaging game with a great back-story with walking and exploring your surroundings. It even helps with your sightseeing and local history. Available for the iPhone as well as Android, Ingress is an app that combines gameplay with your surroundings in a global game of "Capture The Flag". Watch the following video for a brief explanation download the app and get out there and join the struggle. Just be sure to join the Enlightened. :-)

Yaybahar

This is an electric-free, totally acoustic instrument designed by Görkem Şen. The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs. This results in an unique listening experience with an hypnotic surround sound. What you hear in this performance is captured in real-time without any additional effects and with no post audio processing. It really gets going at around the 2.08 mark.

The Drop

Professor Brian Cox's fabulous series Human Universe has been a joy to watch and has been truly fascinating so far. Take a look as he demonstrates two objects of different weights being dropped in a vacuum. You may know the theory but seeing it in action is still a joy.

Retro Web

If you used computers before the existence of the World Wide Web, you might remember the dial-up BBS and ASCII graphics and perhaps you'll feel a little fondness and nostalgia for the simplicity of those times. Well WebSquirrelMonkeyCom make hilarious videos just for the likes of you. I have added several examples below but be sure to check out their YouTube channel for more.

So how would Twitter look if it was invented in the 80's?

What about Youtube and Facebook in the 90's?

And finally, what if Angry Birds were an 80's computer game?
