ISS Live

I'm sure you are all familiar with the International Space Station (ISS), but did you know you can now take a sneaky peak whilst it orbits the Earth every 90 minutes? You can see the ISS without a telescope (the best time is the few hours after sunset or before sunrise), but it is much cooler to see on board whilst the crew are on duty. If the stream displays a black/blue screen, there has been a temporary loss of signal so check back later.

Classical Trance

I actually wanted to post this a few weeks ago but I couldn't find a decent shareable copy. These guys call themselves the ShowHawk Duo and they are from Bath. This was part of their set at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival and it features a mashup of 90's Ibiza Dance Anthems played on classical guitars. Not something I would have thought would work but its sounds great. Please check out some of their other work on YouTube, as they are very talented guys.

Let Rory Go

English: English Actor of "Doctor Who" fame (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
I'm sure that every actor that has ever played a role that ends up being very popular, eventually gets a little sick of all the attention it brings. Whether that be interviewers that insist on asking about it years later, or comments in the street from the public quoting a catchphrase etc. Arthur Darvill who played Rory Williams in Doctor Who is obviously feeling that now but responds to it in a brilliantly witty and tongue-in-cheek way. He recently appeared on the Matt Edmondson show on Radio 1 and sang "The Ballad of Arthur Darvill" to the tune of "Let It Go" from Frozen. Hilarious!

Snail Art

I never knew that snails had so much personality! Ukrainian photographer Vyacheslav Mishchenko created this fascinating series of macro photographs that explore the incredible world of the tiny creatures. I really cannot even begin to appreciate the effort and patience that has gone in to these shots. Check out his website for more of his wonderful work.

Chillax

Do you have trouble relaxing or even sleeping, or do you just fancy something to listen to while you chill out? I may have the very thing for you. A study by sound therapists has been listening to and rating lots of music that claims to be relaxing and has come up with the ideal tune to slow you down and calm you. A song by Manchester band, Marconi Union called "Weightless" has been ranked as the number one accompaniment to a good rest. Lyz Cooper, founder of the British Academy of Sound Therapy explains:
"While listening, your heart rate gradually comes to match that beat. It is important that the song is eight minutes long because it takes about five minutes for this process, known as entrainment, to occur. The fall in heart rate also leads to a fall in blood pressure. The harmonic intervals - or gaps between notes - have been chosen to create a feeling of euphoria and comfort. And there is no repeating melody, which allows your brain to completely switch off because you are no longer trying to predict what is coming next. Instead, there are random chimes, which helps to induce a deeper sense of relaxation. The final element is the low, whooshing sounds and hums that are like Buddhist chants. High tones stimulate but these low tones put you in a trance-like state."

I'm sure you have all heard of Dora The Explorer? Well now the bi-lingual children's TV program that was at very big in the 90's has been given the College Humour treatment and turned in to a trailer for a fake Dora movie.

I for one would pay good money to see the real thing. It nice to see Modern Family's Ariel Winter showing she has a great sense of humour too.

Firsts

Ostensibly Firsts is a marketing campaign for Vodafone but I still think that this video has some life-lessons for us all. An & Ria from the Netherlands have never flown before and the joy with which they first try this daunting experience should remind us all to not take anything in life for granted. More than once, whilst watching this, I found myself grinning. I hope you do too.

Salut Salon

A German female string quartet who not only perform with great skill but a great dose of humour too. Enjoy their "competitive" rendition of Vivaldi's Summer.

The Gate

This is great sci-fi short film that I would love to see as a longer film. Nice tight story telling and fabulous effects. I hope you enjoy it.

New Civilization

Do you remember Civilization? Sid Meier's turn-based strategy epic that was originally created way back in 1991 has gone through several incarnations since but remains a great great game. Well now it has had a makeover, a big makeover by the look of it and its gone all sci-fi. I think I'll have to give it a go. Civilization: Beyond Earth is due out this autumn.

Visionary Concept

Having done a fair bit of 4x4 off-roading myself, I think this is an fabulous idea. I really hope it goes in to production. Thanks to Niall for sending it to me.

Land Rover has unveiled technology that will allow the driver to, in effect, see through the bonnet of the 4x4 to what exact terrain lies underneath. Cameras mounted in the vehicle's grille will capture data, which is then shown via a head-up display on the windscreen overlaying the images on the field of view normally taken up by the car's bonnet, effectively creating a transparent view of the ground through the engine bay.

Near Miss

This is truly astonishing! Anders Helstrup and several other members of the Oslo Parachute Club were enjoying their usual pastime of throwing themselves out of an airplane when the cameras fitted to Anders' helmet managed to capture something that has never been filmed before. Another reason to think skydiving might be dangerous.

Lunar Eclipse

A wonderful time-lapse today of a lunar eclipse that was taken from Florida in 2010. Using a telescope and a dSLR, a photograph was taken every twenty seconds and then assembled together using software.

Coin

Sadly this won't work in this country (well not yet anyway) as it doesn't currently support chip & pin, but it still looks rather cool. Anything that could help cut down the thickness of my wallet would be welcome. I do have a nagging feeling that there is a tremendous security flaw here somewhere though. More details from here.

Karma

Those of you who are regular readers of e-clecticism will know I am no fan of religion. On the contrary, I think it is a massive detriment to the human race. However if I had to choose one I'd definitely go for Buddhism. I shouldn't have to tell you why. This film is spoilt by the fact that it is a commercial but message still a very good one.

Frequency

I have featured comics from xkcd before but there is always room for more. This one is very interesting, each time one of the events flashes, it means it is taking place. It obviously has a US slant to it, but it still makes for a great insight.

Towel Dance

One for the ladies I think. A pair of brothers calling themselves Les Beaux Frères, perform a very inventive, cheeky dance routine on a French television show.
