Fun In Space

Did anybody else want to be an astronaut when they were younger? Actually I still do, but I realise that dream is very unlikely to every come to fruition. Forget the all the important scientific research or human exploration for the betterment of mankind. This is why I want to go.

It does worry me every single time that she is going to bang her head though.

Raleigh Visit

As I said recently, last week I was away with the Sea Cadet Corps on an annual camp that we call "Unit Week". 24 Cadets and 4 Staff traveled down to HMS Raleigh in Torpoint to use their facilities in hopefully educating the cadets but also to have a good time. As the Corps has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Royal Navy, they very kindly allow us to use the amazing facilities that their bases possess. This means that our cadets get the chance to take part in such activities as Harbor Training, Fire Fighting, Damage Control and Assauly Courses.

What follows is a video that I took which although quite long, is just a summary of what we got up to.

Stronger

It is quite popular these days to have a group of soldiers/firemen/construction workers etc make a video of them miming to a popular song and generally having fun. This one is different though in that it has a real message and brought a lump to my throat.

The hemoncology floor of Seattle Children's Hospital performs Kelly Clarkson's song "Stronger". To raise money for this cause.

I'm sorry for the lack of posts over last few days. I helped take 24 Sea Cadets to a training week at HMS Raleigh and unfortunately Internet access was hard to come by. I took lots of video however which I will post here when I get it edited but in the meantime...

...My daughter thinks my blog needs more elephant posts, so just for Emma...

Find Your Way To Oz

I'm afraid this post won't apply to many of you, sorry about that.

Disney and Google have got together to create "Find Your Way To Oz," a Chrome Experiment inspired by Oz The Great and Powerful. Using various HTML5 techniques, including WebGL for the 3D effects, CSS3 transitions and GLSL shaders — accelerated 3D transforms, the Web Audio API for audio effect and the getUserMedia feature of WebRTC to power an in-browser photo booth that uses your computer’s camera and microphone. Visit www.findyourwaytooz.com to try it out.

Incan Treasure

As if it was straight out of a script for Indiana Jones, let me tell you about the secrets that may lie beneath the ancient city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. It seems that back in 2010, a French engineer called David Crespy noticed the presence of a strange “shelter” located in the heart of the city, at the bottom of one of the main buildings. For him there was no doubt about it, he was looking at a sealed doorway. It has yet to be unsealed but in April 2012 an electromagnetic survey not only confirmed the presence of an underground room, but several. A staircase was also discovered. The two main paths seem to lead to specific chambers and the survey also revealed a large quantity of gold and silver. All of this information has now been submitted to the Peruvian government and the French team hopes to eventually get permission to unseal the door and take a look.

NOON

NOON is a scene from a completed feature screenplay. The short sets up the world’s unique premise and introduces our protagonist, Gray, a coyote numbed to the cruelty of the world and his part in it. We watch Gray struggle to salvage what humanity still exists within him when profit is pitted against morality.

Stanley

Meet Stanley. The world's first instrument to have a conversation with its audience and field its own song requests. DIGITALKITCHEN re-imagined a forgotten technology as a simple interactive experience that connects people and music and in new way. Stanley started as a player piano with a simple repertoire found in a box of paper rolls. DK replaced his piano roll with hardware that enabled each key to be controlled electronically. A USB MIDI interface would send note data to Stanley's hardware, triggering each note to be played. All songs were created from scratch or modified existing MIDI files found online.
