Water Fun

For my birthday I got a gift of an underwater camera. The other day I got my first chance to try it out when some of went for a Kayak training session in a pool. Hopefully I'll be able to post more videos as my degree progresses.

In Saturn's Rings

This is the newest teaser for "In Saturn's Rings", a giant screen space film for IMAX® and other big screens, coming summer 2014. This DIY, not-for-profit all-volunteer film is from Greensboro, NC, USA filmmaker Stephen van Vuuren with tons of help from volunteer image processors around the world.

Created entirely from real photographs using photoanimation and multiplane photoanimation. No computer-generated images, painting, cloning, tweening, morphing, texture maps, camera projection or 3D models used.

The film is 100% created using only flat 2D photographs (often hundreds or thousands per frame) stitched together for massive hundred megapixel+ resolutions that are scaled and zoomed using techniques developed by the filmmaker.

Go full screen and enjoy!

Do you remember Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye? How could you forget it, it was all over the radio and TV. It also spawned so many covers, tributes and parodies that were all over YouTube. Well it seems that Gotye himself loved all of these and edited together his own mashup-mix of the best. Enjoy Somebodies - A YouTube Orchestra.

Big Hail

We often have hailstorms in the UK but nothing like this. This one was potentially lethal surely. Filmed in Australia where it seems its not just the wildlife that is out to get you.

JFK Stable

As we approach the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination, it seems the interest and controversy that surrounds that terrible day have not dimmed in the slightest. I found the following rather interesting viewing. The infamous Zapruda film has always been the main point of interest but at, an advanced for its time, 18fps, it has always been tricky to see much detail. YouTube user antdavisonNZ has used some fancy software and stabilised it with additional interpolated frames. The result is a much smoother 30fps.

As I posted about recently, the big day is soon to be upon us, and the BBC are spoiling us with all sorts of goodies in the run up to the 23rd. Check out the trailer below for a documentary that will be shown after the 50th anniversary show, about how Doctor Who began. It is called An Adventure In Space & Time and stars David Bradley as William Hartnell.

Even more exciting is this mini-episode that teases us about what is in store for us for the big show itself. Called A Night of the Doctor, it hints to events that we have all known about but never witnessed, such as what happened the the 8th doctor and the events of the Time War. I'm so excited.

Forest Schools

As part of my degree I am currently learning about forest schools. OK so it does not have the adrenaline rush of climbing or kayaking but in terms of Outdoor Education, it is something that fascinates me.

We recently spent a great day at Queenswood Country Park, learning how the outdoors can have a huge impact on a child's education. We also got to play some great silly games and enjoy the glorious scenery. I even wrote a Haiku.

Damp trees dripping leaves,
Fresh air, autumnal colours,
Inner child released.

It is impressive enough to write, animate and direct an astonishingly good sci-fi short. But when you combine that with the fact you're just 22 and it is your first go. Enjoy R'ha by Kaleb Lechowski.

Master pinstriper Glen Weisgerber demonstrates the roundhand lettering technique. Weisgerber teaches pinstriping and lettering in various YouTube videos, so look out for more. I find this so relaxing to watch but I'm sure it is not relaxing to do.

Smuggler's Run

I have posted about fan films before, but this one is a doozy. Star Wars Smuggler's Run is a 22 minute film, that was filmed on location at the original sets in Tunisia. Director Oliver Thompson has written an original story that is set within the Star Wars Universe between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

Pipe Dream

I haven't checked but I'm sure I blogged about Animusic's musical animation project from a few years ago. In case you don't recall it, I have reposted the video below.

Cool eh? But it couldn't happen for real could it? Well Intel thought differently. Intel Embedded Computing engineers teamed up with Austin-based Sisu to turn that animation into a real computerised paint ball orchestra.

I notice that they don't show you how to stop or even slow down, but despite that I still want a Self Balancing Unicycle.
