Two lucky guys named Brandon Ivey and Sean Casey got some astonishing footage this week when they found themselves inside a violent wedge tornado. They were lucky because they were inside the TIV2 (tornado intercept vehicle) which can obviously survive such an encounter. The tornado touched down in Kansas and more footage can be seen here.

Phone Cover

I've posted about Jason Mraz's hit song I'm Yours before but it certainly didn't sound like this. An interesting use for old technology and nicely arranged.

Hopefully you will enjoy this glimpse in to the world of a gilder. I just wonder how anyone could afford to learn this craft. Surely mistakes are very costly?

Chats With A 2 Year Old

This is one of those simple but great ideas that I wish I'd thought of. Actual conversations with this chap's 2 year old daughter but with another grown man taking her place.

Latte Art

Is there anything better than a really good cup of coffee? Well yes there are probably lots of things but I really do like coffee. It's especially nice with a nice creamy foam top, but Japanese artist Nowtoo Sugi has taken it a step further by using coloured bartender syrup to make the characters he "draws" stand out.

The Chip Shop Awards

It must be difficult to come up with a great advertising campaign. But coming up with a bad one would be easy right? Actually if the Chip Shop Awards are anything to go by, then no. Some of these are genius but at the same time terrible. Take a look at the website but please be warned that some might be deemed offensive.

Philco PC

I'm not sure if this is actually practical for use but I do like the design. Heavily based on the design of the 1950's TV, The Philco Predicta, welcome to the Philco PC.

Worcester Pubs

I'm a partial to a pint or two, but I won't tell you how many of these Worcester watering holes I am familiar with. Perhaps I'll see you in one some time soon.

This video examines the benefits and limitations inherent in current mouse-based and window-oriented desktop interfaces, the problems facing other potential solutions, and visualises Clayton Miller's proposal for a completely new way of interacting with desktop computers.

Footage from on board the RAF Memorial Flight Lancaster as it flies over the Derwent Dam, Derbyshire to mark the 70th Anniversary of the famous WWII Dambusters raid.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters air raid on 16-17 May 1943, a series of events is taking place around Britain, including a flypast by a Lancaster bomber of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at Derwent Reservoir.

Derwent reservoir was one of the sites where pilots from 617 Squadron -- specially stood up to mount the raids -- practised low flying ahead of their daring mission to attack the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams, which produced hydroelectric power for the Ruhr and water for German industry.

Space Oddity

A revised version of David Bowie's Space Oddity, recorded by Commander Chris Hadfield on board the International Space Station. OK, so it's not a brilliant version but he surely gets extra points for the first music video recorded in space.

Smart Window

Samsung has revealed the future window at last year’s CES. Samsung calls it, “the transparent smart window.” You may have seen similar touch screen technologies in movies like Minority Report, but this is the real deal.

Spock V Spock

The more I see Leonard Nimoy the more I realise the man is a superstar. His latest escapade shows him in a challenge with his younger self. Audi have released a superbly funny advert for the new S7. Nimoy and Zachary Quinto work wonderfully together and use a heap of in-jokes. Now all we need is a William Shatner V Chris Pine follow up.

Bullet Time Light

I'm sure that you're familiar with the filming technique dubbed "Bullet Time"; The multi-camera, 360 degree rig first used in The Matrix. The project called 24x360 takes this a step further by using it to capture long exposure light-paintings.

Does the Internet take up too much of your life? Paul Miller, for The Verge, thought so. So he decided to do without it for twelve months. Now he is back.

I was wrong.

One year ago I left the internet. I thought it was making me unproductive. I thought it lacked meaning. I thought it was "corrupting my soul."

It's a been a year now since I "surfed the web" or "checked my email" or "liked" anything with a figurative rather than literal thumbs up. I've managed to stay disconnected, just like I planned. I'm internet free.

And now I'm supposed to tell you how it solved all my problems. I'm supposed to be enlightened. I'm supposed to be more "real," now. More perfect.

But instead it's 8pm and I just woke up. I slept all day, woke with eight voice-mails on my phone from friends and co-workers. I went to my coffee shop to consume dinner, the Knicks game, my two newspapers, and a copy of The New Yorker. And now I'm watching Toy Story while I glance occasionally at the blinking cursor in this text document, willing it to write itself, willing it to generate the epiphanies my life has failed to produce.
