Army v Navy

I'm not sure if I have mentioned it before but I am an instructor with the Sea Cadet Corps. On Saturday we took some of our cadets to see the annual clash of the army versus the navy in the Babcock Cup at Twickenham. Despite the rain and the fact that the navy were hammered 48-9, it was a great day. I have spared you the pictures of the streakers.

It's The Way He Told Them!

The Comedians_47
The Comedians_47 (Photo credit: Thwaites Theatre Photos)
I was sad to learn that Frank Carson passed away earlier this year. Being of a certain age it seems he might be one of the last of the comedians from my youth. A style that is not as popular now of telling one-liners and puns and not always being politically correct. Here's to you Frank, RIP!

The Grim Reaper came for me last night, and I beat him off with a vacuum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with death.

A mate of mine recently admitted to being addicted to brake fluid. When I quizzed him on it he reckoned he could stop any time.

I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin, 3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!

My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70! Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the weI was at an ATM yesterday when a little old lady asked if I could check her balance, so I pushed her over.

I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move.

I was driving this morning when I saw an AA van parked up. The driver was sobbing uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself, that guy's heading for a breakdown.

My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning, can you believe that, 2:30am?! Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes.

Paddy says "Mick, I'm thinking of buying a Labrador ." “Sod that” says Mick "have you seen how many of their owners go blind?"

Man calls 999 and says "I think my wife is dead" The operator says how do you know? He says "The sex is the same but the ironing is building up!"

I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice!! At least I presume she was poor - she only had £1.20 in her purse.

I woke up last night to find the ghost of Gloria Gaynor standing at the foot of my bed. At first I was afraid.......then I was petrified.

A wife says to her husband you're always pushing me around and talking behind my back. He says what do you expect? You're in a wheelchair.

I was explaining to my wife last night that when you die you get reincarnated but must come back as a different creature. She said I would like to come back as a cow. I said you're obviously not listening.

The wife has been missing a week now. Police said to prepare for the worst. So I have been to the charity shop to get all her clothes back.

The wife was counting all the 1ps and 2ps out on the kitchen table when she suddenly got very angry and started shouting and crying for no reason. I thought to myself, "She's going through the change."

When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonkas saying that they wouldn't feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexist pigs. I mean, it's not as if she'd have to reverse the blooming thing.

Local Police hunting the 'knitting needle nutter', who has stabbed six people in the village in the last 48 hours, believe the attacker could be following some kind of pattern.

A teddy bear is working on a building site. He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen. The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman. The foreman grins at the bear and says "Oh, I forgot to tell you, today's the day the teddy bears have their picks nicked.

Just got back from my mate's funeral. He died after being hit on the head with a tennis ball. It was a lovely service.

This is a way better love story than Twilight...Probably. An award winning animation featuring a dragon, a knight and a fair maiden. Enjoy!

Surviving Hitler

This is a remarkable documentary with a plot straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster but it is all true! It is longer than the usual I post here on e-clecticism but please take the time to watch it as it is truly remarkable. A German soldier falls in love with a Jewish teenager in Nazi-ruled Berlin. When war breaks out, he sends love letters from the Russian front while her family hides resistance fighters in their home. The young sweethearts become co-conspirators in a plot to assassinate Hitler. When the plot fails, they face almost certain death. Unbelievably, both survive the Gestapo's wrath and they become the first couple to marry in the ruins of post-war Berlin.

Driving High

I'm sure this is too good to be true and that it is actually faked, but it is just too funny not to share. "Maybe I'll come down, maybe I wont" had me lolling. Enjoy your day!

Universal Beauty

There can be no doubt whatsoever that our universe is a stunningly beautiful place and sometimes that beauty can be enhanced just as it has in the following video. Using still images of NASA's Voyager and Cassini missions, Sander van den Berg has created a superb piece of work that is worth seeing.

Uppleva

Love them or loathe them, you have to agree that those wacky Swedes at Ikea love coming up with new ideas in furniture design. This is a breakout even for them though. Introducing Uppleva, a completely new range that integrates smart TV and sound system with furniture.

UPPLEVA brings beauty and functionality to the living room, solving the problem of cable clutter and miss-match between TV and furniture.

Festival Of Light

The 2012 Light Festival in Ghent, Belgium. The festival was host to almost 30 exhibitions including plenty of 3D projection mapping, fields of luminous flowers, and a glowing phone booth aquarium, however with 55,000 LEDs and towering 28 meters high the Luminarie De Cagna seems to have stolen the show.

My Model Town

Some of you may remember that I have posted about Tilt-Shift photography before and I even posted a tutorial for you to try it yourselves. Last Sunday I had some rare free time with the camera and decided it might be fun to start turning my home town into a model village. So here is the start I've made.Click to enlarge.

Sesame Treat

I cannot say that the US TV show Sesame Street was a staple for kids of my era in the UK, but we now all know about its almost legendary status. Whilst I was looking for something completely unrelated I came across the following clip that helps confirm this status. Paul Simon sings his 1972 hit Me & Julio. Although you could argue its an odd choice for a children's show, the fact that he is spontaneously accompanied by children singing and dancing, makes it a classic TV moment from times gone by. Enjoy.

Drama On The Square

To launch their new TV channel in Belgium, TNT created a superb commercial. They placed a big red button in a quiet square, in a quiet town and waited for some to push it.

Caine's Arcade

This is such a fabulous story. 9 year old Caine Monloy is a boy who spent his summer vacation building an elaborate DIY cardboard arcade in his dad’s used auto parts store. The maker of the following film explains further...

Caine dreamed of the day he would have lots of customers visit his arcade, and he spent months preparing everything, perfecting the game design, making displays for the prizes, designing elaborate security systems, and hand labelling paper-lunch-gift-bags. However, his dad’s autoparts store (located in an industrial part of East LA) gets almost zero foot traffic, so Caine’s chances of getting a customer were very small, and the few walk in customers that came through were always in too much of a hurry to get their auto part to play Caine’s Arcade. But Caine never gave up.

One day, by chance, I walked into Smart Parts Auto looking for a used door handle for my ’96 Corolla. What I found was an elaborate handmade cardboard arcade manned by a young boy who asked if I would like to play. I asked Caine how it worked and he told me that for $1 I could get two turns, or for $2 I could get a Fun Pass with 500 turns. I got the Fun Pass.

A website has been created for Caine which you can visit here. A big thanks to my buddy Roo for pointing this out to me.

Turntable Rider

The combining of two separate street cultures seems like an obvious thing to attempt but I'm sure it is not as easy as it sounds. However some clever Japanese people from the world of BMX and the music DJ have combined their skills to make Turntable Rider. This device effectively turns the bike into a DJ's mixing desk. If you're interested in finding out more you can visit their website or check out the behind the scenes footage of the following video.

Pac-Movie

Here's a treat for all the vintage game fans out there. There is no doubt that PAC-MAN was an absolute classic game that has spawned many spin-offs, but this is the first time I have seen it in the form of a film. OK it's not exactly a full film but rather a fan's idea of a trailer. Enjoy!

I am not a fan of golf, but this is genius. Shaven Ape Ltd, a London based production company decided to have a bit of fun and let the BBC know what improvements they have made to this year's Masters at Augusta. It is of course fake, but I really do hope this is shown.

The Future Is Now

This is a wonderful piece of vintage footage featuring a hero of mine, Arthur C. Clarke. It is taken from 1974 when he appeared on an Australian Broadcasting Company documentary telling us that in 2001 every household in will have a computer and be connected all over the world. I'm so glad that this visionary got to live to see his predictions become reality.

L.E.D. Surfer

Film-maker Jacob Sutton had his subject, snowboarder William Hughes, kitted out with a custom LED suit, covering him from head to toe in hundreds and hundreds of little lights. Sutton filmed Hughes descending a slope in Tignes, in France’s Rhône-Alpes, over three pitch black nights—the only light source being the subject himself. Hughes appears a heavenly creature gracefully flying down a mountain in slow motion engulfed in light.

Bright Idea

Here is a glimpse of what could be the successor to modern day light bulbs, the Plasma light bulb which puts out nearly 10 times as much light, uses half the power of a traditional light bulb and can reach temperatures that are equivalent of the surface of the sun.
